Municipality
Around the year 1130, Baron von Oberhofen built a house of prayer between Lakes Thun and Brienz, from which the Augustinian monastery of Interlaken emerged. This is where we first come across the name "Interlacus". From monastery to tourist resort: in the Middle Ages, monasteries were also inns for pilgrims and other travelers. The monastery inn in Interlaken enjoyed a special reputation, as in its heyday it was the most powerful and richest monastery on Bernese soil. Bern had the monastery inn closed in 1527, but nobody paid any attention to this decision and the inn continued to enjoy great popularity as a rest stop for commercial travelers, and in the 18th century more and more travelers took advantage of the inn, even if they were only traveling for pleasure or to broaden their horizons. Natural scientists, painters, musicians and poets explored the imposing mountain world and thus aroused the interest of a broad public.
