Municipality
The beautiful mountain farming village of Habkern is often referred to as a little pearl. Habkern, first mentioned in documents in 1275, is sheltered from the wind and has little fog. The densely populated municipal area, which is inhabited all year round, barely rises above 1,200 m, although the highest point (Hohgant) is at 2197 m. Habkern has around 600 to 700 inhabitants. Habkern is therefore one of the smaller municipalities in the canton of Bern. In terms of area, however, it is one of the largest. The southern, more densely populated half of Habkern with the four Bäuerten feeds the Lombach with its streams. The Emme has its source in the more inhospitable north-eastern part, which is criss-crossed by high moors and only inhabited during the alpine season. Habkern borders not only on various Lake Brienz municipalities, Unterseen and Beatenberg, but also on Eriz and Schangnau as well as Flühli in Lucerne. Habkern is easily accessible from Unterseen (there are 500 meters of ascent over 6 km) in both summer and winter. In summer, a heated swimming pool and a tennis court invite you to enjoy sporting activities as well as hiking. A hike to the ibex colony, which has settled around the Augustmatthorn, can be an unforgettable experience. From a geological point of view, the Habkern Valley is one of the most interesting areas in Switzerland. But Habkern is also ideally situated for living. You can be in Lucerne in 60 minutes by car or in Bern in 50 minutes, where you have many opportunities for shopping, culture and sport. Habkern itself also has shopping facilities, schools, various activities and public bus transport to Interlaken
