Municipality

In 1233 there is a documentary reference for the first time to find "Interlappen" on the right bank of the Aare, in the area of today's upper and lower village of Unterseen. In 1279, King Rudolf I of Habsburg granted Baron Berchtold III. von Eschenbach-Oberhofen received permission to build a fortified town, which was built immediately and received municipal rights. During the Sempacher War (1386), Unterseen opened the gates to the Bernese army and in return received confirmation of its traditional freedoms, and so in 1397 Bern redeemed the last pledge from Countess Verena von Kiburg and thus became the legal owner of the highest town on the Aare. In 1402, Unterseen adopted Berne city rights and was legally integrated into the growing Bernese state. Unterseen is right next to Interlaken and the municipal boundaries are now so densely built up that only a village sign reminds you whether we are in Unterseen or Interlaken. Today the village has approx. 5,600 inhabitants and encourages you to linger with the almost inexhaustible range of leisure activities. In terms of transport, Unterseen is ideally located in the Jungfrau Region for living or vacationing. Unterseen-Interlaken has a wide range of summer and winter activities and has a direct train connection to the valley stations of the ski areas and excursion destinations of Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen with Wengen and Mürren, the Schynige Platte and the Harder. Unterseen can be reached by car or train. Unterseen-Interlaken is directly connected to international locations by train.
